Golden Spiral Helps Students Get Bike-Ready for Back-to-School

Is riding a bike to school as antiquated as writing in cursive?

We hope not. Waverly Belmont School, part of Metro Nashville Public Schools, promotes families walking and/or biking to and from school. They even host a bike club for students. Our employees ride their bikes or drive past this school daily when arriving for work. We’ve seen little tykes on bikes filling the bicycle lane.

We decided to join their efforts to promote cycling. Every year, Golden Spiral supports a handful of outreaches into the Nashville community. We support the scholarship work of Women in Technology of Tennessee, many efforts from The Greater Nashville Technology Council, and the award-winning Tennessee Chapter of HIMSS.

This year, we turned to a need in our backyard. Literally.

If you walk outside our back door during the school day, you’ll hear one of the sweetest sounds around: kids laughing and playing outside. The playground and outdoor PE facilities for Waverly Belmont School are less than 100 yards away.

Bulldog Bike Safety Day

On July 27, 2019, more than fifty children and their families turned out for a morning celebrating bicycle riding.

Golden Spiral partnered with Halcyon Bike Shop to offer:

  • Free bicycle tuneups
  • Helmet and bicycle fittings
  • Bicycle obstacle course
  • Chats with parents and students alike about bicycle safety and fun
  • A grand prize giveaway of a bike chosen specifically for the winner

Golden Spiral has been a longtime gold-certified Bicycle Friendly Business by the League of American Bicyclists. This event dovetails with our community spirit and passion of cycling.

In addition to families from the school and community, Mary Beth Ikard from the Mayor’s Office or Transportation & Sustainability and Virginia Pupo-Walker, School Board Member from District 8 of the Metro Nashville Public Schools joined us. Terry Key and the Edgehill Bike Club brought his big smile and popsicles for the students — and parents.

We extend our sincere thanks to Principal Susan Blankenship, Assistant Principal Tim Caher, PTO President Rachel Roddick, and Erin Gilmore, the Immediate Past President of the school’s PTO. Nashville Metro Police were kind enough to send officers from the Midtown Hills Precinct Community Engagement Team to support the students. They enjoyed riding around the school with the older students and answered dozens of questions.
